The homeowners who avoid winter damage are the ones who run through their exterior checklist in October — before the first hard frost.

1. Clean Gutters Before Freeze-Up (Late October)

This is the most important item on the list. A fall clean removes summer pollen buildup, late-season construction dust, and the insect residue that accumulates around window frames. It also lets maximum natural light into your home through the darker winter months.

3. Book Christmas Light Installation (September–October)

If you want professional Christmas lights this year, September is when to call — not December. Durham Region installers fill up in October. Installation on frozen ground and icy rooflines is dangerous; professional crews stop booking new installs once temperatures drop consistently below zero. The homes that have great holiday lighting every year booked their slot in late summer.

4. Soft-Wash Siding Before Winter Moisture (September)

Algae and mildew on exterior siding absorb moisture and expand during freeze-thaw cycles, accelerating surface degradation over winter. A late-summer or early-fall soft wash removes biological growth before it gets locked into the siding surface by frost.
